Our tips for winter holidays in Val Pusteria | Pustertal

Marxegger AlmThe Marxegger Alm is 1,756 metres above sea level in Rio Bianco, in the heart of the Aurina Valley mountains. Our sister Kathrin and her husband Gregor run the hut from December to April. Near the alm is the Tristenbach sledge track, also lit during the night (sledges can be hired on location from the alm). This stop is very appreciated by Alpine skiing, trekking and sledge enthusiasts. You will be able to sample wonderful typical home-made Aurina Valley products. Among the many choices, particularly tasty are the typical Melchamuis, ideal as a little warmer, canederli, or Erdäpfelblattlan, made with mashed potatoes and fried in very hot oil.

The alm can be reached after an hour and a half walk starting from the car park at the end of the town of Rio Bianco. It’s also open in the evening and the sledge track is always well lit. The alm is the starting point for very popular winter activities, such as Alpine skiing at the top of Cima di Vila (2,459 m) and Cima Henne (Mount Corno; 1,120 m) and snow walking to the Oberhütte (2,033 m).

Winter excursionsThe first snow flakes fall from the sky, turning Ameto into an enchanted place. Immediately there is the desire to get out in the open, to leave the first prints on the fresh snow. Families and children have snowball fights and build snowmen. Even they will certainly appreciate the wonderful views across the snow-laden Brunico Valley.

Many winter excursions are available just outside our hotel.
Walks through the snow to Villa Saint Catherine, or to Mount Aufhofen, for a spectacular view of the valley, discovering the mysterious ruins of the Chela Castle, or continue further to Montassilone, or down to Gais. Other excursions not to be missed: the Rio Molino river valley and the Vila di Sopra Valley. We will be happy to give you more information on the many winter excursions around the Puster Valley.
